Launch of Developing the Young Workforce Hub (DYW) – Ayr Academy – 29th May 2026

The Lord Lieutenant, Sheriff Iona McDonald OBE recently spoke at the formal launch of the DYW Hub at Ayr Academy. During the event she said

“Today marks an important step forward for Ayr Academy and its commitment to Developing the Young Workforce. What stands out most about this initiative is the clear vision behind it — a vision to ensure that every young person has access to meaningful opportunities, the chance to develop valuable skills, and the support they need to succeed beyond school in an ever-increasing challenging environment.

The creation of this DYW Hub is not just about a physical space. It represents a more connected, inclusive and visible approach to learning. By bringing together staff, partners and pupils in one central hub, Ayr Academy is making it easier for young people to access guidance, build confidence, and explore different pathways.

It is especially encouraging to see such a strong focus on equity — recognising that some young people face additional barriers and ensuring that targeted support is available while maintaining opportunities for all. That balance is crucial in helping every young person reach their full potential.

The range of programmes highlighted — from barista skills and childcare to construction, rural skills, beauty, and beyond — reflects the diverse talents and ambitions of the pupils here. These opportunities not only build practical skills, but also confidence, leadership, and a sense of purpose.”
